I was noodling about the illness-salutogenesis spectrum and it struck me that so many things in my life, and I suspect yours too, stem from small errors of judgement that we repeat over and over. Illness, divorce, Enron, decisions in our own business... In each scenario I ran, rarely did something big or negative happen out of the blue. Usually there were decisions made that while small at the time took me down a different road. Those decisions when cumulative ended up with something that couldn’t be ignored; a “bigger problem”. Let’s take illness. We know the chronic health conditions of our … [Read more...]
Listen to the Bigness of the Fellow Within
"Listen to the Bigness of the Fellow Within" is the title of a pivotal book by a fellow chiropractor, BJ Palmer from 1949. I read it early in my career and it led me to ask more questions than it answered. Routines and instinct…part 1 of 2
Ever consider how much you run your day on reflex? At the extreme, reflex is the coordinated response with a result from the body at the survival level, it's instantaneous. As a child, we initially had to expend a coordinated effort in learning tasks. We learned how to walk, jump, brush our teeth, write numbers and our name. We repeated these things until the skills were developed and became a habit. Initially we had to think a lot about how to do a … [Read more...]
Slow Down To See More
I love being busy. Like really busy. So busy that every moment of each day is brimming with fullness. But is this really a good thing? I had a number of wake-up calls over the past number of years, but wasn’t listening. Accidents, friends shaking their heads at my schedule, being impatient with myself and others. I created unrealistic expectations of what I could accomplish, sleeping less to accomplish it, and it was never enough. I felt under [self-imposed] pressure to be and do more. I was running everywhere, not prioritizing down time... Sound familiar? I was reminded of this again of … [Read more...]
