Last week, I wrote to you about not taking “No” for an answer. “No” was simply not an option! It was such a powerful reminder to "stay calm and carry on". It was remarkable how fast an alternate solution came to mind when I became present in the moment, was clear with “my ask”, and then waited to receive an answer. I remained calm when I realized the person in front of me was not going to be in any way helpful. No point wasting my energy on something that she is unable to change, so it was best to keep moving forward. While waiting at the attendant’s desk, I did what I teach: I practiced … [Read more...]
Affirmations (again)
Adding to last week’s blog we’re back at affirmations (again)!! We’ve been here before via a couple of previous blogs so let’s review what a successful affirmation is. A successful affirmation occurs when you: make a declarative statement using yourself in the present tense state in an empowering way what you do want are clear and specific elicit emotion and feeling keep it simple, if possible, in one sentence In last week’s blog, of the 5 (1a to 1e examples listed), the affirmations arising from them might look like: I am sleeping soundly and awakening feeling more rejuvenated after … [Read more...]
The Locum
I just finished two very different, yet similar locums over 6 weeks in the early fall. For those unfamiliar with the term, “Locum” is a coverage doctor who sees patients when their principal doctor is away. This is a relatively new experience since having my own practice and being in the reverse role of hiring locums for approximately 25 years. I am in an enviable position to be very picky in whom I cover, as I want well-established practices using technique styles with the primary focus in neurological or tonal models. I’m very confident in my skill sets to determine when, where, and how … [Read more...]
Do you need constant validation?
I've been pondering a question I saw in a book a few months ago. Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success asks, "If you had to choose, which would it be? Loads of success and validation or lots of challenge?" It brings me to what I’ve been observing more and more lately. That is the craving for attention. I don’t know if it’s due to our living in the age of instant gratification, you know the immediacy of expressing an opinion and posting it, or over-sharing. Have you noticed it, too? It appears to be a constant need for external validation by others. The same people … [Read more...]
New Identities
No, not that kind of identity. No espionage here. I was reading Time Magazine in June and saw a question to Joss Whedon on his quote about identity as something that is always being formed. It made me wonder and think about how I look at myself now versus 10, 20, or 40 years ago. Based on my own experience, I agree with Joss. Through new experiences I find out new things about myself. I look at things I’ve said, and in retrospect, they led to what I needed to hear. I've done things that have created "forced" growth - not knowing it at the time. I've seen things, especially in practice, that … [Read more...]
Our Perspective and Success
Our view colours how we see the world. For example we may see it as never having enough or as truly abundant. The picture we've painted of the world is like a pair of glasses – it frames, colors and shapes what we see, how we see it, how we go about doing things in it, and whether we enjoy it. Naturally, how we go about creating and expressing success is going to vary depending on our perspective. Looking at perspective and success, client “A” views the world very differently than me. His view is as a win-lose proposition. He sees success at the expense of others and is very protective of it. … [Read more...]
Stop Waiting – Lean into “It”
One of my clients is in real-estate. She is waiting for her ideal client to walk through the door. The problem is that she is doing just that – waiting, sitting by the phone for the magical call. Success comes to us when we evoke action. Some sort of movement needs to occur. So I asked her what 5 things she could do on her part to stimulate action. She thought of 5, implemented them and quickly found her phone busier. Do you find yourself waiting for someone to tell you what to do? A boss, a client, a regulator, or an instructor? Are you at cause or effect when you wait? Is your personal … [Read more...]
What Is Success?
Success is personal in both how we measure it and our experience (feel) of it. When we master what we've set out to achieve, and hopefully it is something we are passionate about, we feel happy, fulfilled and successful. I would like to add that when we achieve success the world also becomes a better place. So the root of success really is that we matter; what we think, what we do and how we do it impacts everything. There is a ripple effect. Success can certainly be achieved in many areas. In North America we have an inordinate focus on business and financial success, or riches. There are … [Read more...]
To Your Success!
When was the last time you wrote out 100 successes? Never? A few years ago perhaps? Don't think you have 100? Perhaps you're asking why would ANYone in their right mind want to waste time doing this? You see, you are far more accomplished than you realize. Technically you were born a winner because in utero, the sperm that made you, beat out millions of others in the race of conception - you. Bet you never thought of that one. How often have you compared yourself to others. Did you come out on top? Not that it is a race of course, but ideally your template should be to compare yourself to … [Read more...]
