"Listen to the Bigness of the Fellow Within" is the title of a pivotal book by a fellow chiropractor, BJ Palmer from 1949. I read it early in my career and it led me to ask more questions than it answered. To summarize, it’s about the remarkable intelligence that we do not fully understand, nor when we ponder, can we really grasp. As stated, "Behind the Universe is a Universal Intelligence which has directed its functions in millions of ways for millions of years. It follows a definite pattern which never varies, each to its kind and form." (1) As Wiki notes from another excerpt of volume 22, … [Read more...]
The Locum
I just finished two very different, yet similar locums over 6 weeks in the early fall. For those unfamiliar with the term, “Locum” is a coverage doctor who sees patients when their principal doctor is away. This is a relatively new experience since having my own practice and being in the reverse role of hiring locums for approximately 25 years. I am in an enviable position to be very picky in whom I cover, as I want well-established practices using technique styles with the primary focus in neurological or tonal models. I’m very confident in my skill sets to determine when, where, and how … [Read more...]
The Pebble in My Shoe
What's the Pebble in Your Shoe? You know the annoying little reminder that something's off course. It may be a small inkling or something obvious that’s not quite right. Perhaps it’s showing up as dissatisfaction in your work or arguments with yourself and the ones you love. Perhaps it's not saying what needs to be said in a specific relationship. It may be a niggling, bothersome ache or pain. Do you feel like you're carrying something heavy on your shoulders or that something is eating away at your gut? Perhaps, it's the weight of a ball and chain tethering you down? Or, is the hair rising … [Read more...]
Trusting our Inner Voice
Much of our society reinforces an outside-in approach. "I have your answer," it says. So, we learn to look for the answers outside of ourselves. In essence it teaches us to not trust our intuition. When you look at many successful people, they will tell you that they do trust their gut feelings. They trust their 6th sense. In Michael Gelb's book How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci " brain researchers estimate that your unconscious database outweighs the conscious on an order exceeding 10,000,000 to 1. They say that this database is the source of your hidden, natural genius. In other words, a … [Read more...]
Routines and instinct…part 1 of 2
Ever consider how much you run your day on reflex? At the extreme, reflex is the coordinated response with a result from the body at the survival level, it's instantaneous. Step on a tack on the floor and your body is responding before you are fully aware of what has happened. Reflexes protect us from immediate harm. As a child, we initially had to expend a coordinated effort in learning tasks. We learned how to walk, jump, brush our teeth, write numbers and our name. We repeated these things until the skills were developed and became a habit. Initially we had to think a lot about how to do a … [Read more...]
Running on Reflex
Ever wondered how much we run our day on reflex? I call reflex the ongoing habits to which we are not cognitively mindful. We get up, usually the same way to perform the same routines in getting ready for our day which was much like the day before. Yet we expect something different. Reflexes do not involve much effort in thinking because they're automatic, hence reflex. At the extreme, the reflex is the coordinated response with a result from the body, it's instantaneous, step on a tack on the floor and your body is responding before you are fully aware of what has happened. We may have … [Read more...]
Have a Heart
Have a heart: It's February and of course the month we often focus more closely on the heart. In my own journey, it is an eye-opening realization that the people who are truly happy are the ones who are authentic and work from a place of unconditional love. It begins with self first, then they radiate outward to others. It matters not how much they've got, their pedigree, their school, business or how many degrees they have. While achievements and heart-warming accolades are wonderful in themselves, they can be empty unless realized through an open heart and sense of “oneness” or connection … [Read more...]
