Wow, it is 2015 already! It slips in so quickly, don’t you think? Rather than start from the laundry list of massive goals one usually sets January 1st, let’s develop a plan for one health goal and one personal development goal. As I’ve written many times, it’s often better to stay away from massive goals this time of year. During the 1980's the back of my business card had a quote by Herophiles: "When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth is useless, and reason is powerless." It’s my experience that our professional and … [Read more...]
Salutogenesis: The Secret of Positive Change
"The Secret of Change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the new" ~ Socrates. It is my experience that we create and see more of something depending on what we focus on. If I ask you to think of a red car, it will pop into your mind. If I ask you to NOT think of a red car, well my bet is another red car just popped into your mind. What if I ask you to think about a blue bus, does your focus change? Yes, you are now visualizing a blue bus. In September, I attended a seminar on "Adaptability" in Chicago with much of the conversation focused on changing … [Read more...]
Manage by Energy Not By Time
I'm constantly being asked how I get so much done in a day, and I had to stop and think about what 'so much' meant. I guess I do accomplish a lot and have done so for years. In pondering, I've realized that I manage my energy more than my time. Yes, time does come into play, but when I work on the highest energy-requiring and priority items first, I get a lot done. I then leave the lower priority, lower energy-requiring items later in the day. Have you found that when you have a lot of energy, things get done? Perhaps they get done in record time? Your focus, creativity, and productivity are … [Read more...]
Can’t is a 4-letter word
Can’t is a 4-letter word because like many of the 4-letter varieties, it declares something to ourselves and also to others. I call it a closer, since there is not much that can be said after it’s spoken. How can we argue with can’t? When we say can’t we are really reducing our responsibility in whatever endeavour we’re applying it to. Do we want to give up our power? What’s even worse is when we personalize it with an I: I can’t get this job done I can’t get the kids' meals on the table on time I can’t workout 5 days per week I can’t lose those 10 pounds I can’t make a relationship work I … [Read more...]
Mindful or Mindless?
I was working out with a medicine ball on my Bosu yesterday and I couldn't remember how many reps I'd done. Good that I noticed but not-so-good that I was not fully present. My mind was occupied on another project at the time. Why is this not good? Our body and mind should be aligned which has a double pun as a chiropractor but by aligned I mean aware & mindful of each other. How often do injuries occur in work or play when not paying attention? When an injury has occurred where was your focus preceding it? Our body is intelligent yet we … [Read more...]
Are you getting enough sleep to be the Best Version of You?
How did you sleep last night? Are you dog tired? Maybe you are one of the nearly ⅔ of adults experiencing disordered sleep according to the National Sleep Foundation. Difficulty falling asleep, experiencing light sleep or non-restorative sleep for many nights in a row over a number of weeks. Makes me tired just thinking about it. When we do not obtain enough sleep it affects our quality of life - you know it & feel it. It impacts our communication & performance in both work & home, our emotional well-being, clarity in thought, food preferences & our … [Read more...]
