Last week we looked at the salutogenesis model in medicine compared to the pathology model. If you missed it, go there now as this week is a continuation of that post. What we un-covered in that post is that we cannot study disease to create health. Let’s take a look at this model in a social context. When Mother Theresa was asked if she would participate in an anti-war demonstration, she was cited as saying that she would not join a march to denounce war. When asked why, she stated “I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a … [Read more...]
The Locum
I just finished two very different, yet similar locums over 6 weeks in the early fall. For those unfamiliar with the term, “Locum” is a coverage doctor who sees patients when their principal doctor is away. This is a relatively new experience since having my own practice and being in the reverse role of hiring locums for approximately 25 years. I am in an enviable position to be very picky in whom I cover, as I want well-established practices using technique styles with the primary focus in neurological or tonal models. I’m very confident in my skill sets to determine when, where, and how … [Read more...]
Eyeball, Love and Inspire
What I’m going to share with you today, I first heard in the 1980s. One of my colleagues and mentors, Dr. James Carter, shared this with me and it’s been indelibly etched on my brain ever since. Eyeball represents connection. When looking at someone directly, it brings our attention into the moment. What we call present time consciousness (PTC). If the eyes are the window to the soul, why waste time looking elsewhere when you are with someone? It acknowledges the value of the other person. I’ve found that by looking at someone directly in the eye, they quickly become my whole focus in that … [Read more...]
Have a Heart
Have a heart: It's February and of course the month we often focus more closely on the heart. In my own journey, it is an eye-opening realization that the people who are truly happy are the ones who are authentic and work from a place of unconditional love. It begins with self first, then they radiate outward to others. It matters not how much they've got, their pedigree, their school, business or how many degrees they have. While achievements and heart-warming accolades are wonderful in themselves, they can be empty unless realized through an open heart and sense of “oneness” or connection … [Read more...]
Rejoice and Renew
Welcome to 2013! What do you want for this coming year? More confidence, vitality, or more connection with people? Perhaps inner peace or greater self-awareness? Maybe lining up your actions to match who you really are? What "new and good" things do you want to renew from 2012 and take with you into 2013? What small to grand things will you rejoice over from 2012? How do you rejoice...what does that look like for you? In 2013, one of my top goals is to designate the space (meaning the time and place) to experience "self", the inward journey of being more present and centred. Truly … [Read more...]
Get In The Game
Get in the game. What game? Am I missing something? I am talking about the game of YOUR life. What are you waiting for? The weekend?Retirement? A vacation? I love to live fully, yet I myself get stuck in my stuff and forget the priorities of LIVING in the now. This happens on those days I have not booked "Me Time" in the calendar. Or worse, underestimate the time it will take me to do something. Or I change my schedule with the internal talk of “OK, I’ll do that meditation, QiGong, Visualization, stretching, breathwork, workout, or whatever...later”. Did you notice the "or’s"? Yes, way too … [Read more...]
