Unlike Humpty-Dumpty we don’t break. Well, I guess we do when we fall off a wall that’s high enough.
Recently, in my discussions with other coaches, the concept of people who need “fixing” came up. I offered a different opinion in that people aren’t broken.
If we see ourselves as in need of fixing, most often it’s in comparison to someone or something else which is external to us. As one of my clients put it, “When I do not measure up, something must be wrong with me.”
If we see ourselves as broken, we only see the faults. I am not sure how seeing faults can move anyone into an energy rich environment. When focused on “the wrong” we aren’t shining the spotlight on “the right”…our abilities, skills, and positive attributes.
To create “more” for our coaching clients, we need to recognize that we all come from “somewhere”. However, it is an error to drag the somewhere of the past into the story of our future. The key is to help our clients “see” a new light.
Each of us is unique. Each of us is successful in more ways that we currently may feel or realize. It’s the known as well as the unacknowledged successes we grow from.
So, I’ll ask you to consider moving away from the mental concept of needing to be fixed. Instead, let’s move to the idea that we are already successful in many areas of our lives. The next step is to shine a light on those areas we haven’t tended to yet, to bring bigger and brighter success to ourselves, our work, and our lives.
