Have you seen the movie Runner, Runner with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake? In it they say, “Anything we touch, touches us”.
What struck me is how significant that line really is.
While I believe we are much more than the sum of all of the life experiences we’ve encountered, the point is made that there are gradients of events and experiences, interpretations and beliefs, that when we engage with them they change us in return. In changing us, it’s hard to go back to where we were before.
I also thought about our how we’re continually interacting with the nature of our environments and lives. Although we are “touched” by these elements, how we perceive it will dictate how we react and/or respond to it.
If I come to my day frustrated and short tempered what I’ll see in my environment are all the elements that match where I am in that moment. Anything I touch, touches me. That will be my reality; however, it may not be someone else’s reality.
This is the value of doing regular check-ins. It brings awareness from our autopilot states and instead we “check-in” to consciously monitor our sensations and feelings.
When we are aware then we have choice. We can choose to stay where we are or change to something different, or more preferred.
When we choose to change to something greater, we then “see” our day in a new context and thus get “touched” by it in a different way, too.
This is the type of pivotal work we do in our move to mastery program. An audio replay on creating roadmaps is linked here.
